President Boris Tadic is expected to meet with party heads to discuss forming a working group for preparing the Srebrenica resolution. According to daily Vecernje novosti, this will be the first step towards writing the declaration that will condemn the crimes in Srebrenica, but is not expected to be deem the crimes as “genocide.” Tadic to discuss resolution with party chiefs The working group is expected to also write a declaration condemning crimes committed against Serbs during the war. Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic said that there are signs that suggest that the document will be written very quickly. She said that it is possible that the declaration will be on the parliamentary agenda at the first regular session on March 2. Some 90 intellectuals from America, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Russia and Bulgaria are also involved in the political game surrounding the declaration. They have sent Tadic and the parliament an appeal to not adopt a resolution that would deem the crimes in Srebrenica genocide. One of the signatories, Velko Valkanov, president of the Bulgarian National Council for Peace, said that what happened in Srebrenica cannot be deemed genocide. He said that it was a tragic episode in the civil war that was blown out of proportion by enemies of the Serbian people. The appeal states that if Serbia adopts a resolution condemning genocide, it compares itself to the likes of Nazi Germany and would support the stance that the Republic of Srpska was built on genocide. The intellectuals are calling for the adoption of a united resolution written in an ethnically neutral language that will appropriately commemorate the victims of the war.
