The trial against a group of Belgrade anarchists accused of international terrorism begins on Wednesday before the High Court. According to the indictment, Ratibor Trivunac, Tadej Kurepa, Ivan Vulovic, Sanja Djokic, Ivan Savic and Nikola Mitrovic threw two Molotov cocktails at the Greek embassy in Belgrade on the night of August 24, 2009. Anarchists’ trial begins on Wednesday The attack caused material damage worth EUR 18 and no one was injured. Members and supporters of the Anarcho-Unionist Initiative said they committed the attack in order to show support for Greek student Todoris Iliopulos, who was arrested during protests in Greece in December 2008 and held a hunger strike while in prison. Because of the serious indictment and several months of custody, as well as the abuse Kurepa said he suffered in prison, a group for monitoring the case has been formed, and various intellectuals are calling for the indictment to be abolished and the six suspects to be freed. According to those who support the freeing of the anarchists, the trial is a political process ideologically motivated against the left wing in Serbia, when taking into comparison the torching of the United States embassy in February 2008 during the “Kosovo is Serbia” rally, in which one protester died. Only one person is accused of the U.S. embassy case and is being tried for causing serious danger, while the six who threw the homemade bomb at the Greek embassy are on trial for international terrorism, which carries a sentence of in between three and 15 years if found guilty.
