Former Mayor of Zrenjanin Goran Knezevic will soon become a member of Serb Progressive Party (SNS), Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti writes. Knezevic is accused of defrauding the town’s budget of RSD 150mn. “Ex-DS mayor to join opposition party” According to the daily’s sources, Knezevic had a meeting with SNS deputy leader Aleksandar Vucic and several other high ranking party members in a local Zrenjanin restaurant last weekend. The newspaper states that the reason for the meeting was to discuss the former mayor’s admission to SNS, but that the outcome of the talks is unknown Knezevic neither confirmed nor denied that the meeting took place. He did say, however, that he was “negotiating with four or five political options” and that the result would be known by the end of the week. The Democratic Party (DS) local committee in Zrenjanin claims that the former mayor has not left the party and that he still owns a DS membership card. While Knezevic was in custody, his father and wife vigorously attacked DS for “turning its back on him”. Upon release, the former mayor stated that staying with DS would be tantamount to “masochism and legitimization of the party’s bad moves”. Knezevic also said that he “had not had his final word in politics yet”.
