UNMIK to remain in Kosovo

Priština daily Infopress said that the UN mission in Kosovo, UNMIK, will be in Kosovo for another year at least, if not longer.

Pristina daily Infopress said that the UN mission in Kosovo, UNMIK, will be in Kosovo for another year at least, if not longer. “Even though the authorities of UNMIK have faded, the mission will remain in Kosovo, and Resolution 1244 is still active, while the closing of the mission will be very hard because it needs the approval of Russia,” the daily adds. UNMIK to remain in Kosovo UNMIK spokesperson Russell Geekie said that the presence of the UN and the special representative in Kosovo will continue, and that the Security Council’s Resolution 1244 is still in effect. “The reconfigured UN mission in Kosovo wants to continue with its role in the north, even though there is a new plan which calls for the closing of the UNMIK office,” another local daily stated, quoting Geekie as saying that UNMIK was not consulted regarding the strategy or contacted regarding the possibility of taking on a new role. “Other than observing and reporting, the role of UNMIK is also to work as the administration in northern Kosovska Mitrovica,” Geekie said.
