Surveys in Croatia show that Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Ivo Josipovic has a significant lead in the polls over independent candidate Milan Bandic. According to surveys, Bandic was not able to overcome the 18 percent difference from the first round in the two weeks between rounds. Josipovic in lead as second round approaches The first round of the presidential election was held on December 27. Josipovic took 32.42 percent of the vote, while Bandic finished second with 14.83 percent. While parties of the center-left support Josipovic, along with officials of the Serb national minority, Bandic receives most of his support from defense associations, Croatian alliances in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and rightwing parties and individuals. The Catholic Church in Croatia has also indirectly showed support for Bandic. Analysts say that Bandic was hurt by an overly aggressive campaign and claims that former prime minister Ivo Sanader supports him. Sanader is currently the least popular politician in Croatia. Bandic defended himself from the claims, but not very convincingly, over the last several days. The media was closely following Sanader’s announced return to politics, which did not help Bandic, since the election campaign was not followed very closely during those days —which always works to the disadvantage of the candidate with less support.
