Croatian presidential candidate Milan Bandic said that Serbia and Croatia could remain friendly and that the lawsuits between them will not alter relations. “The Croatian genocide lawsuit against Serbia was filed over ten years ago. We had to do that because of the thousands of victims and the damages worth millions…I am not saying that there were not crimes committed on both sides, but Croatia was the victim of aggression,” Bandic told Belgrade daily Vecernje novosti. Bandic calls countersuit “provocation” He said that the countersuit filed by Serbia can be taken as a “provocation without legal justification” and said that such a move “is surely not an effort towards compromise.” “If the Serbian president publicly apologizes for the aggression and comes to bow before the innocent victims of Vukovar, that would be an effort towards honest discussion. The truth needs to be looked in the eye. I know that it is painful and that many voters will not accept it, but I believe that Serbia has such potential,” Bandic said. The second round of presidential elections will be held on Sunday in Croatia, in which the independent candidate will be competing against Social Democratic Party hopeful Ivo Josipovic.
