Director of the Office for European Integration Milica Delevic said that the citizens of Serbia benefit the most from the country’s European integration. “With the application for candidate status, and then when we become a candidate for European Union membership, there should be celebration at the beginning of the work not at the end, because this is the real period in which our society is truly changing,” Delevic told daily Politika. “Citizens benefit most from EU integration” She said that it is now easier to imagine Serbia with a functioning legislature, without corruption as a staple of the society, as a stable business environment, with laws that are implemented, education comparable to education in EU countries, consumers that are protected in a similar way as consumers in the West, the preservation of the environmental by attracting investors that will not endanger the country’s ecological standard, etc. “In order for Serbia to reach that level, where its citizens will be “the biggest benefactors in the process of European integration,” the government, parliament, and citizens need to roll their sleeves up and get to work, she said. “It is not the decision of the EU to advance us into the next phase and accept us as members which changes us, we have to do that on our own,” Delevic said, adding that “if the EU decided tomorrow that we would become members, other than the opening of some funds, the citizens would have no use from this.”
