All citizens of Serbia will be able receive the swine flu vaccine starting tomorrow, says Health Minister Tomica Milosavljevic. He stated that some 855,000 units of the vaccine would be delivered to Serbia by the end of December, which is more than originally planned in the contract to buy the vaccines from Swiss Novartis. Vaccines to be "available to everyone" He said that 30,449 people from priority categories have already been inoculated, and that "vaccination of 25,000 people would save three human lives". "Setting aside EUR 20mn for the purchase of the vaccines was an unexpected and enormous spending, but it is still a lot less than the healthcare system would spend to treat patients, or cost to the economy from employees’ absence from work,” the minister said. Milosavljevic repeated that vaccination was the only protection against the virus and that “we must all show solidarity in such a situation.” The minister also criticized MPs, saying they had “failed the test” because it is “very irresponsible to say that the health of citizens is the most important, while failing to lead by example.” Meanwhile, the Batut Institute of Public Health of Serbia said 544 cases of swine flu have been registered in the country, with 46 related fatal outcomes.
