The Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) did not support the ruling coalition during the budget vote yesterday "because they were defending the Constitution". At the same time, the party did not attempt to topple the government, said its leader Balint Pastor. SVM: We defended Constitution He stated that the party will still be a member of the ruling coalition and that the second option would be early elections, "which are currently not needed by Serbia". "We are ready to talk to the Democratic Party on an equal footing. I do not support statements that DS will decide whether or not we remain a part of the ruling coalition. The law on the budget is unconstitutional and we did not support it, but we will remain inside the ruling coalition, because there are currently no better alternatives, that is, the other option is elections," said Pastor. He also reminded that SVM has no officials on the state level, and that "by exiting the government, no one from that party could be replaced". Asked why SVM MPs recently voted in favor of the Vojvodina statute, but did not support the budget, Pastor said that "Vojvodina would still be functioning under the Milosevic Constitution" if they had not done so. Pastor accused the Democrats of "caring only about gathering enough votes", rather than "discussing the voting" on the Budget Law. "SPS [Socialists] did not vote for the Law in Information and nobody talked about bringing down the government," he said. Pastor also stated that money set aside for Vojvodina was not the only reason why the party decided not to toe the coalition line on the budget, but added that the province "must have the position in real life as it does in the Constitution of Serbia". "The budget is the most important, but the question is why the government had no sensitivity toward our demands when the law is on our side," said he. Pastor noted that he was aware his party only had four MPs, but added that "if they are counted on, then discussion about laws should be made before they enter the parliament procedures". This ethnic Hungarian party, its leader said, has "institutional contacts with all parties". Balint Pastor (FoNet, file)
