A Jat Airways Boeing 737 traveling from Belgrade to Istanbul was forced to land in Sofia, Bulgaria, because of engine problems. According to the media, the plane landed in Sofia at about 18:00 CET on Sunday after taking off from Belgrade at 16:00 CET, after a two-hour delay. Jat Airways plane in emergency landing Passengers said that "something broke off the plan and fell into the engine", which caught on fire, Belgrade daily Blic writes. According to this newspaper, the aircraft was above Istanbul when this occurred, but the pilot could not land because of poor weather conditions. An hour later, the plan landed in Sofia, where firefighters, emergency medical workers and police were waiting. Daily Vecernje Novosti said unofficially that the pilot decided to land in Sofia because of noises and vibrations that were observed during the flight. The newspapers provide different information when it comes to the number of passengers aboard the plane, ranging from 56 to "some 100".
