Taxi drivers, govt. reach agreement

Representatives of protesting taxi drivers and the government late on Thursday reached an agreement. After this, the taxi drivers, who had been blocking traffic in downtown Belgrade, ended their strike and the traffic was normalized. Taxi drivers, govt. reach agreement President of the taxi-driver trade union Nezavisnost Svetislav Beljinac told Tanjug that Minister for Infrastructure Milutin Mrkonjic and Minister of Trade and Services Slobodan Milosavljevic signed the agreement on behalf of the government. It will see the implementation of the decision on introduction of fiscal cash registers in taxi cars postponed until March 1, 2010. The taxi drivers agreed to help solve the problem of unregistered taxi drivers, said Beljinac. On Thursday, traffic almost came to a standstill in Belgrade, with the central city streets blocked since early morning hours. The taxi drivers also staged protests in 19 other towns in Serbia.
