Vaccination against swine flu (A/H1N1 virus) began today at noon in all health centers in Serbia. 140,000 units of the vaccine, produced Swiss company Novartis will be available, and the estimates show that this amount will be enough to cover about 70 percent citizens who are most at risk. Those groups include chronic patients, medical workers and employees in social institutions, and pregnant women during the second and third trimester. Five percent of medical workers who are directly exposed to the virus, two percent of military personnel, two percent of police personnel and two percent of employees in public services should also receive the vaccine now, according to the ministry. Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic was among the first to be inoculated today, and in front of TV cameras. Vaccination of MPs will be organized next Tuesday and Wednesday, December 22 and 23. The Drugs and Medical Devices Agency of Serbia has issued a certificate for the first batch of the vaccines to be distributed. The agency's director, Tatjana Sipetic, who signed the certificate, said that according to the results of lab analysis the tested batch of Focetria vaccines was completely in accordance with standards and quality. The second shipment of vaccines has arrived last night for lab testing which will take at least 14 days. Meanwhile, a center set up to observe side effects of the inoculation says that patients who receive the vaccine will monitored. “Possible side effects can change over the time. In order to know whether this ratio remains the same we will have to monitor them,” stated the center’s chief Ivan Kovacevic. 37 people died in Serbia so far after contracting the virus. (Beta)
