"OSCE, MUP have good cooperation"

Serbia's Interior Minister Ivica Dacic and OSCE Secretary General Marc Perrin de Brichambaut met in Belgrade on Wednesday. The two agreed that the cooperation between OSCE and the Serbian Ministry of Interior (MUP) was very good, the MUP said in a statement. "OSCE, MUP have good cooperation" Brichambaut pointed out that the OSCE has supported numerous activities of the Serbian police, and that iit would continue to do in the future, especially after Serbia's recent progress in European integration. The OSCE will continue to cooperate with the MUP, especially in the areas pertaining to police reforms, which is why a memorandum of agreement was signed in September 2009, the statement continuess. It also stresses the need for the OSCE to assume a more active role in the region in order to bring about a permanent solution to the refugee issue, "which is a priority". Dacic, according to the announcement, agreed that the cooperation was extremely good and very diverse, adding that the MUP and OSCE had "many more joint activities ahead of them". In a statement issued by the OSCE today, Brichambaut is quoted as praising Serbia's determined reform course and underlined the organization's commitment to further assist the country in fulfilling its democratic commitments. During his visit to Belgrade, Brichambaut welcomed the government's efforts to further strengthen the rule of law, achieve full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, comply with the highest standards for free media, address the needs of minority communities and improve the situation with refugees in the region. “The OSCE will continue supporting Serbia as it undertakes key reforms in line with international standards in the fields if rule of law, human rights, law enforcement, democratization and the media.” “The Serbian Government's steady European course created a favorable environment for the achievement of an important milestone - the visa free regime with the Schengen zone countries,” Brichambaut was quoted. The statement reads that, in talks with Serbian leaders and civil society representatives, Brichambaut discussed Serbia's potential to play a leading role in ensuring stability and prosperity not only in the Western Balkans but in South-Eastern Europe as a whole. The OSCE secretary-general will visit Bujanovac on Thursday, where he will meet with the mayors of Bujanovac, Presevo and Medvedja, the statement concludes.
