President Boris Tadic says true development of local self-governments and Serbia is possible only through acceleration of the process of decentralization. He also urged the introduction of a new election system, reports said. Tadic calls for speedy regionalization Addressing the 37th Assembly of the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities, Tadic said that decentralization and regionalization should help stop the process of depopulation of parts of Serbia and give citizens an opportunity to have good quality of life, no matter where they live. Tadic also said that the increase of the level of responsibility is in direct relation to the election system, since it is not possible to have a state function well if only one citizen is directly elected in elections. “There should be several election levels in Serbia and that is why we need a new election system, which would raise the level of responsibility between citizens and politicians,” said Tadic. The third important element of sustainable development of local communities is legal regulation of the issue of property, i.e. adoption of a law on property of the Republic of Serbia, said Tadic.
