State Administration and Local Self-Administrations Minister Milan Markovic said that the Vojvodina statute is in accordance with the constitution. He said that it also confirms the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia. “Statute confirms territorial integrity” Markovic said that the statements that the statute goes against Serbia’s integrity and sovereignty are unfounded and malicious, adding that all referendums are defined by the constitution, which is the same constitution that those attacking the statute approved. “The right to a referendum has nothing to do with the territorial integrity of Serbia, it only sets the condition for the citizens of the autonomous province to vote on any eventual changes to their borders within Serbia,” he said. Asked whether he is convinced that Vojvodina will not try to gain independence like Montenegro, Markovic said that such suspicions must be backed by serious evidence, and that the content of the proposed statute does not offer any evidence in that direction. “On the contrary, the statute does not provide a basis for such incorrect and irresponsible claims,” Markovic said. He said that he hopes that the government will adopt the draft law for the election of committee officials and the state election commission by the end of the year. “I expect that we will pass laws next year on parliamentary elections and the financing of political parties and conclude the reforms of the election laws,” he said. Asked whether the party or the individual MP will own the mandate according to the new laws, Markovic said that the blank resignations will be key to the power of the parties. “They will become a part of the last, because they are not expected to be included in the laws we are preparing,” Markovic said, adding that he does not expect elections to be announced in 2010.
