Foreign Minster Vuk Jeremic says all the conditions for unblocking of an interim trade deal with the EU have been fulfilled. Serbia’s bid to become candidate for membership in the EU should follow, he said in Belgrade on Wednesday after his meeting with Greek Acting Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas. He repeated that membership in the EU was the government’s strategic priority. “We will accomplish that task easier with Greece as our partner,” Jeremic said and thanked Droutsas for his country’s principal support in Serbia’s EU integration process and the commitment to protect Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Issues of the status of Kosovo and Metohija and the EU integration are two separate topics for Serbia, Jeremic continued, and stressed that Belgrade will never, either implicitly or explicitly, recognize the independence of Pristina. Jeremic referred to neighboring Macedonia when he said that Serbia understood Greece’s position regarding "the name of the country that has Skopje as its capital city", adding that it was "a very sensitive issue". “We support the position of the Greek government which is reasonable, balanced and rational,” he stated. The foreign minister also thanked Droutsas for sending his condolences to Serbia in the wake of the passing of Serbian Patriarch Pavle and added that the Greek minister would attend the patriarch’s funeral on behalf of the Greek government. Droutsas pointed out that the Balkans and Serbia were “a part of the European family” and that this was the reason for the Greek government to propose an initiative, dubbed "Agenda 2014", that would see all of the Western Balkans join the EU in 2014. “Greece wants to be the leader in the Balkans and we will support EU membership of all the countries of the Western Balkans,” the Greek minister said.
