A charity hunger strike that gained the support of 676,280 people from all over 80 countries ended on midnight last night. The campaign, dubbed "Hunger Strike Against Hunger", was organized on World Food Day, and was joined in Serbia by 176,280 people, and over 400 companies and organizations. Anti-hunger campaign declared success Victoria Group topped the list of donors with its EUR 600,000 donation of foodstuffs. Fund B92 President Veran Matic told a news conference in Belgrade yesterday that he was happy with the support and singled out Victoria Group, noting that beside the donation, the company also secured transportation to the distribution centers – a service that would otherwise have cost more that EUR 50,000. "I'm certain that this move will prove to be inspirational for other companies, individuals and various associations that will join us in the best possible way. A great task is ahead of us to secure food for several tens of thousands of citizens in the next year," he said. The campaign was supported by public figures, governmental organizations and NGOs, public institutions, media companies, unions, associations, sport clubs, as well as Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic and music festivals Exit and Supernatural. Now the humanitarian project Food for Everyone will initiate gathering of assistance for those going hungry, opening of new soup kitchens, and work toward establishment of an institutional and system framework for improving the position of those who are unable to secure a normal living for themselves.
