The Serbian government, which has offices in over 90 buildings, could be moved to New Belgrade, according to daily Blic. According to a plan drafted by Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac, which the Belgrade newspaper has seen, the prime minister and 19 ministries are to be moved across the Sava River to New Belgrade, into three buildings of the ex-SIV (former Yugoslavia government) complex. At the same time, the military and police HQs would be moved to the Banjica district of the capital city, near the Military Medical Academy (VMA), and three ministries – foreign affairs, finance and justice – would remain at their current locations in downtown Belgrade. The proposal aims to improve coordination in the ministries, to have them work better and enjoy more security, but also to free up the city center from all unnecessary traffic, the article says. The move would also free up 400,000 square meters of prime business space, which could be rented out, sold, or used in another way. Sutanovac is proposing that the attractive government building in Nemanjina St. be turned into a hotel once the premier’s cabinet and ministers move out. The minister said that everyone has agreed to the move in initial, informal consultations. According to him, the prime minister’s cabinet could be moved to the new space this fall, while it would take at least two years for the rest of the moves to be realized.
