Serbian officials led by President Boris Tadic will start a five-day visit to China tomorrow, where they will sign an agreement on strategic partnership. Tadic will be accompanied by Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic and Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, as well as a delegation of businesspeople. Serbia seeks to boost ties with China Before heading to China, Tadic said that along with Brussels, Washington and Moscow, Beijing should be the fourth pillar of the Serbian foreign policy, and that good political relations should be accompanied by economic cooperation. Belgrade is trying to clinch deals that would see Beijing finance the construction of a bridge on the Danube between Zemun and Borca, and it is expected that the loan and construction conditions for the bridge will be one of the main topics during the visit to Beijing. Even though it is a small market for China, there is room for Serbia to attract Chinese investors, Serbian Chamber of Commerce Vice President Mihailo Vesovic said. “We are not interesting to them as consumers, because we are a small market. We are important because we have good political relations with them, which can enable the participation in serious infrastructure projects that are not that small. We can also serve as a bridge to the European Union, the region, and towards Russia,” Vesovic said. China is Serbia's fourth largest trade partner, mostly importing computer parts, monitors, television sets, textile products and shoes. In the coming period, Serbia is expected to increase exports to China, as it once exported machinery, and now deals in frozen fruit, metal, wood and pharmaceutical products. Vesovic said that this is why relations between Belgrade and Beijing must be utilized, since they have never been better in the last 20 years. “The only open question is the question of debt, which exists to China, but that is an open question which is being solved,” he said. The Serbian delegation will be in China August 20-25, and along with participation in an investment forum in Beijing, there is a planned visit to Shanghai, which is the largest financial center in China.
