Experts say that companies should already be aware that many workers could become sick in the fall, once a new massive influx of the swine flu arrives. Branislav Tiodorovic, a member of the Health Ministry’s work group for following the virus, said that the wave of flu infections will not be severe, and that most of the cases will be easily treatable. Preparations for swine flu season “The work group will do everything it can to give recommendations for working and functioning in different sectors of the country,” he said. Tiodorovic said that three years ago, “when the bird flu was active, which was more dangerous than the swine flu,” the group developed a proposal and plan for different sectors—schools, trade, local communities, preschools, banks, public companies, and that it is currently analyzing the needs in the current circumstances. According to Tiodorovic’s words, there is no reason to panic, but the measure should be taken in due time, in order to be ready for the two or three crucial waves of the virus, which are expected in the fall and winter. “It is most important to ensure that those who are sick, have a temperature or some kind of respiratory infections, stay home from work and that the employers know that it will be harmful for them if they come to work,” Tiodorovic said. He said that if the vaccine for the flu arrives soon, children should be vaccinated first, then the young and people who work in jobs where they are in contact with sick people, such as health workers. Even though Serbia has already ordered three million doses of the vaccine, which according to Tiodorovic could arrive by the end of November at the earliest, the question is when it will be shipped, because there are many countries “waiting in line.” If the vaccine arrives in November, then the wave of infection in the late fall and winter would be “greeted with more immune people,” Tiodorovic said.
