A multi-ethnic group of archeologists is working on the excavation of a recently discovered site dating back to the Roman period. For the sixth year in a row, this multi-ethnic camp is being organized near Gracanica, where young archeologists are participating in the excavation of the remains of buildings from the time of Roman Emperor Justinian. The camp is being financed by the German Archeology Museum and the Kosovo Museum is overlooking the work. Kosovo Museum Archeologist Kemajlj Ljuci said that those participating in the camp are both working on the excavation and familiarizing themselves with Kosovo archeology. “There are 40 students here of various nationalities, Albanians, Serbs, Roma, Muslims. Along with the archeology lesson, our goal is to have these children begin to be friends after the war and turbulent times. They get along very well and are in constant contact,” Ljuci said. Participators in the camp openly discuss how pleased they are to participate in the dig, stating that it is an excellent chance for interning and learning the profession, but also for exchanging experiences between each other. A student from Gracanica Miroslav Cirkovic said that this was the first time he has participated in the camp, but that he had no problem getting along with the team of young archeologists from all over the region. “I liked the company, it was good with Albanians and Germans. I learned a lot and I am still learning from them, I have good friends, and I am having a good time,” he said. A veteran of the camp and economy student from Pristina, Aurora Kastrati, said that all those participating in the camp have the same goal—to progress professionally and to start to overcome differences between those attending the camp. “We have very good relations. We are here to cooperation and we never had any problems,” she said. The work of the multi-ethnic camp began on July 20 and will last until August 7.
