European Commissioners Jacques Barrot and Olli Rehn say that facilitating contact between people is the foundation stone for preparing Serbia for EU membership. The justice and enlargement commissioners published a joint opinion piece in today's editions of Belgrade dailies Vecernje Novosti and Politika. EC commissioners' letter to Serbians They said that the EC was committed to Serbia’s European path, and an essential part of this was the proposal for visa-free travel to the “Schengen countries,” which include EU member-states (minus Great Britain and Ireland), as well as Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. “Yesterday was a great day for all of Europe,” Barrot and Rehn said. They added that visa-free travel meant great privileges for ordinary citizens, but also brought Serbia economic benefits, because business contacts would be sped up. The two commissioners congratulated the Serbian people and government on working hard to fulfill the necessary conditions for abolishing visas. They said that given that the Schengen zone represented a common area of free movement between 28 countries, this meant that the highest security standards must be implemented, especially at external borders, in order to ensure the security of all EU citizens. “That is why Serbia must make further efforts to maintain the achieved results. All open questions must be resolved in sectors such as improving border control, effective implementation of the Law on Foreigners, adoption of a Migration Control Strategy, and effective implementation of a legal framework for combating organized crime and corruption,” the EC commissioners stated. In conclusion, Barrot and Rehn stated that they believed that Serbia was able to invest these added efforts in order to meet all the remaining conditions. Olli Rehn (Beta, archive)
