Kosovo Minister Goran Bogdanovic says unilateral decisions on charging customs duty at administrative crossings, “even if taken by EULEX”, are unacceptable. Bogdanovic said that discussions and talks would be held on the issue, and that this was the best way to address the current problem. Belgrade, EULEX seek customs compromise “We’re willing for revenue collected at those crossings to go primarily to the Serb community in Kosovo and to remain with local self-governments in northern Kosovo. That would economically strengthen the Serb community,” said Bogdanovic. EULEX Chief Yves de Kermabon said that the mission’s next move would be to introduce customs at the Brnjak and Jarinje administrative crossings. At the same time, he reiterated that customs and Kosovo’s status were two separate issues. De Kermabon said that under Security Council resolution 1244, Kosovo was a single customs territory, which was why EULEX was trying to restore the situation at those crossings to what it was prior to the independence declaration. He said that the security situation in Kosovo was satisfactory, adding that, since April and the formation of the mission in its full capacity, it was now possible to establish the rule of law throughout the province. “There have been a few incidents in northern Kosovo, but I think we’ve managed to resolve them peacefully. We’ve managed to lift the road blockades in the north and to show that we’ll never suspend our activities at the crossings, which we did in cooperation with the Serbian institutions. Customs levies could be the next step, once a political solution is found,” said the EULEX chief. Goran Bogdanovic (FoNet, archive)
