United Serbia (JS) leader Dragan Markovic Palma says his party finds a draft Law on Information unacceptable. Markovic, who teamed up with the Socialists (SPS) and the Pensioners (PUPS) in a pre-elections coalition, which is part of the government in another, broader coalition, explained that the opposition to the draft came as it is "contrary to European standards". Ruling party rejects media law "It is unacceptable to limit the freedom of the media and limit investigative journalism. Politicians and journalists are not in the same position, because in any conflict between the two sides, politicians can go back to their immunity, unlike journalists who do not enjoy that privilege," said Markovic. He also noted that the draft envisages "fines worth millions for the media", while the same would not apply to politicians. Markovic concluded that his party believes this type of legislation, and that relating to "any other segment of life", must be harmonized with that found in Europe, while the draft in question fails the test, and is therefore "unacceptable". Meanwhile, their partners SPS announced they would abstain when the bill comes up for voting in parliament. Party leader and first deputy PM Ivica Dacic said that the ministers hailing from his party also abstained when the draft was voted on by the cabinet, before being sent to MPs. The reason for this, Dacic explained, is because the Socialists "did not wish to be accused of once again doing what they did in the past". The party, founded and led until his death by former President Slobodan Milosevic, ruled Serbia throughout the 1990s.
