MPs will not be attending plenary sessions during the 25th annual World Student Games in Belgrade, but will work in committees and public debates instead. Parliament is preparing for an early summer recess. Student Games to stop parliamentary work While the opposition wants business to continue as usual, the ruling coalition argues that there is no point as parliamentary sessions will not be broadcast live during the Student Games, . Dedicated viewers of parliamentary sessions will therefore have to find other past-times in July. Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic explained that MPs would still be working however, and would not be on vacation until early August. “During the World Student Games, we will organize the work of parliamentary bodies, public debates and other forms of work. We will most probably not have regular sessions at this time, but parliament will be working in June, July and part of August. We will ensure that MPs get at least two weeks’ vacation in August,” Djukic-Dejanovic said. The ruling coalition justifies the decision to temporarily suspend parliament’s work during the Student Games on the basis that RTS will be screening sporting events at that time instead. “As far as work during the Student Games is concerned, one of the basic reasons why parliament is taking a break is the lack of a TV broadcast,” said Vlajko Senic of the G17 Plus party. The opposition, which earlier in the year reacted angrily to plans to suspend parliamentary broadcasts, are now criticizing the decision to suspend parliament’s work because of the absence of a live broadcast. “I do not see any reason why parliament should not work during the Student Games, nor do I see any ties between parliament and the Games. I think it is just a break that the ruling coalition needs to finalize its draft laws, but we will see,” surmised Ivan Andric of the Liberal Democratic Party. “Whenever you see parliament not working, it is not because of the Serb Radical Party, but the ruling coalition—either they are travelling somewhere, or following some kind of event they have an interest in,” official Dragan Todorovic said.
