Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac says that "recognizing Kosovo and joining NATO" are not conditions for Serbia's "European path". "During the conversations with people holding the highest possible positions in the EU and NATO, we received assurances that recognizing Kosovo or entering NATO cannot be made conditions for Serbia's European path," he told Vecernje Novosti daily. "Kosovo, NATO, are not conditions" Sutanovac said that the issue of further Euro-Atlantic integrations was "very serous", and that the priority is "above all, European integration". Asked whether there would be a referendum in Serbia should NATO invite the country to join, the minister said that "the decisions will certainly be made in line with the Serbian Constitution and laws". "It's naïve to think that a referendum could be called any time soon. I did not notice anyone engaged in a pro-NATO campaign. And I expect the people who are leading the anti-NATO campaign to offer an alternative. The time is not right for a referendum. The army has plenty more work to do, this idea is not ripe yet," said Sutanovac.
