During and after the concert Croatian singer Marko Perkovic, a.k.a. Thompson in Zagreb, police arrested six persons, three for displaying Ustasha symbols. The Ustasha were members of the puppet-Nazi Independent State of Croatia (NDH) regime, set up during the Second World War and responsible for running death camps. Arrests at controversial singer’s concert Tthe Zagreb police administration officials told reporters that two young men and one woman were arrested because they were wearing symbols which according to the law can influence intolerance on an ethnic, racial and religious level. According to the law, such infractions and violations can lead to either a money fine or a prison sentence of up to 30 days. Police said that there were about 40,000 people at the concert, even though journalists said that there were a lot less Thompson fans at the show, about 20,000. The concert was held, despite protests from various organizations and association, on May 30, when Defenders of Zagreb Day is celebrated. Besides the fact that Thompson’s concerts always include Ustasha iconography in the crowd, this one was a hot topic in Croatia because it was approved by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) official Milan Bandic, who was a mayoral candidate in the second round of elections. The concert coincided with pre-election media silence. This morning, it was announced that Bandic won another mandate as the mayor of Zagreb, while independent candidate Zeljko Kerum won in Split. Kresimir Bubalo of the Democratic Union for Slavonija and Baranja won in Osijek, according to initial results from the second round of local elections announced the state election commission. In Dubrovnik and Vukovar, SDP candidates are currently ahead, according to polls.
