President Boris Tadic has rounded off his visit to Paris by giving a lecture at the Institute for International Relations. “This visit could be historic, it could mark a new stage in a strategic partnership between the two countries. Forging good relations with France is of national importance, and Serbia’s strategic goal is entry to the EU,” Tadic said last night in his lecture, attended by a large diplomatic contingent. During Wednesday’s meeting between Tadic and French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy, the two leaders agreed that there should be no more conditioning of Serbia’s European integration, and announced that a strategic partnership would be signed between Paris and Belgrade. The Quai d’Orsay announced that Sarkozy had stressed “the importance of Serbia’s fast accession to the EU and commended the efforts towards modernization that Serbia is taking.” The French president committed to helping Serbia on its European path and reiterated France’s support for lifting the visa regime for Serbian citizens, a Quai d’Orsay spokesman stated. Earlier on Thursday, Tadic unveiled a memorial plaque to Serbo-French friendship in two world wars at Les Invalides in Paris, where Napoleon Bonaparte is buried, and held meetings with French deputies.
