The chairman of the Slovenian parliament’s Foreign Policy Committee has compared comments by Ivo Sanader to “rhetoric of Milosevic’s Greater Serb nationalism.“ Ivo Vajgl sent a letter to the Croatian parliament last night in reaction to the Croatian prime minister’s statement on Wednesday in the town of Gospic, when he said that the Slovenian leadership was pursuing a weak policy. Sanader compared to Milosevic “Alas, we need to remind him that the last time we heard that kind of rhetoric and direct communication with ’healthy forces’ was during the heyday of Milosevic’s Greater Serb nationalism,“ Vajgl wrote in his letter to Croatian counterpart Maria Zubovic. The Slovenian official advised Zubovic to desist from such rhetoric, and called on MPs from both sides to set an example of mutual respect, maturity and patience, adding that it would be unwise for politicians in both countries to stoke public sentiment with statements that were not in the spirit of good neighborly relations. The Slovenian Foreign Policy Committee is today discussing amendments to EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn’s latest proposal for a solution to the border dispute. The session is being attended by Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor, and should the committee adopt the changes, which have already been approved by the majority of Slovenian political parties and the government, Ljubljana will send its response to Rehn by the end of the week.
