Celebrations will be held in Belgrade’s main pedestrian zone, Knez Mihailovo Street, in honor of the 59th anniversary of the creation of the plan that gave birth to the European Union. Serbia celebrates Europe and Victory Day Belgraders will be able to visit EU member-state stands offering a range of attractions: rap music from Bulgaria, a presentation of London, which will be hosting the next Olympic Games, while visitors will be able to try their luck at the lottery at the Dutch stand. To mark the holiday, B92 spoke to the European Commission’s delegation chief to Serbia Josep Lloveras. He said that Serbia, as well as the European Commission and Enlargement Commission Olli Rehn, wanted Serbia to get on the Schengen visa white list, and that progress was being made, but more needed to be done. “When you have a united goal it is easier to make progress. I hope that the commission will be able to give a positive recommendation to all the member-states, and to free up the visa regime for Serbia. I know how important it is to the citizens, even to those that are not travelling because they feel isolated,” Lloveras said. Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac, as the Serbian president’s envoy, will be placing a wreath at the monument to the unknown hero on Avala today in honor of the victory against fascism in World War II. A delegation of the Serbian military will be laying wreaths at the monument to the liberators of Belgrade in World War II, at the Monument to the Soviet Soldier, as well as at the Monument to Soviet Veterans on Avala. An honorary 10-gun salute will be fired from cannons at the Kalemegdan fortress at noon, according to the Defense Ministry. He told B92 yesterday that serious work was being put into addressing this issue. “We are working, but your government is working very responsibly on this matter too. Honestly speaking, I think this is the area where we have reached the greatest consensus, primarily between political parties in parliament, civil society supports this, and the issue has a united goal for all of us,” Lloveras said. “As far as Serbia is concerned, we are preparing a program of budgetary support using the accession assistance program. We expect our member-states to approve it, so the first instalment of this aid could be available after the summer,” Lloveras said.
