The government is expected to adopt a declaration linked to the outbreak, spread and containment of swine ‘flu at its cabinet meeting today. Sanitary inspection teams are cooperating currently with officials from the Health and Interior Ministries and the customs services at all Serbian airports. Govt. to issue swine flu declaration “Next week we expect the formation of a government coordination body, which would include, besides the Health Ministry obviously, representatives from other ministries in order for the government and other systems in the country to be fully operatively ready to react promptly,” said Deputy Health Minister Svetlana Mijatovic. Serbia does possess a certain number of anti-flu antidotes. “The therapy exists. It’s effective, obviously there is the possibility during use, over the course of the coming months, or maybe a year that the virus becomes resistant to the treatment, at which point the pharmaceutical companies will find a new treatment… We have enough for the start of any pandemic, but that medication needs to be purchased in the meantime,” said Dr. Dragan Delic, president of the Serbian Health Council. Should a ‘flu pandemic break out, the Serbian economy would suffer the same repercussions as those of other countries, which would be, among other things, a slowdown in economic activity and considerably reduced workforce, warns Aleksandra Brankovic from the Institute for Economic and Social Research.
