Foreign ministers from eight EU member-states have called on the EC today to scrap visas for the Western Balkan countries without any further ado. The letter, sent to EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenburg, is signed by the Estonian, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Polish, Slovakian and Slovenian foreign ministers. Eight EU FMs call for visa abolishment “We believe that the essential decision on the abolishment of the visa regime should be taken without delay, as soon as the states meet the set criteria,“ reads the letter, adding that the European Commission (EC) should adopt recommendations for visa abolishment without delay, prior to the next EU Council of Ministers. An EC report is expected in mid-May, when the Commission is due to adopt recommendations on which Western Balkan states have qualified for abolishment of the visa regime. The final decision will be taken in November, and if positive, the visa-free regime would begin to be applied from the start of 2010.
