Serb villages in Metohija, in western Kosovo, which were left without electricity for over a month, were reconnected to the power grid on Saturday. The villages are inhabited by Serb returnees, who were previously driven out of their homes by the province's ethnic Albanians. Power temporarily restored to Metohija villages The Kosovo company in charge of distributing electric power, KEK, said that Saljinovica, Tucep, Osojane, Kos and Suvi Lukavac residents were "given ten days to agree among themselves on the manner of payment" and that failing that, electricity would be "permanently cut off". Some 900 Serb returnees currently live in the Osojane Valley, KiM Radio reported. Minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanovic earlier this week said that international community representatives "showed the will to solve the problem", and that the Kosovo Serbs suggested that each village receives its own contract, but that those contract cannot have any symbols of "the independent state of Kosovo". Bogdanovic also said that his ministry is prepared to pay the bills for 100 of the most financially vulnerable families in each local self-government unit. The minister explained that negotiations are under way on how to overcome the problem faced by the Serb communities left without electricity throughout the Kosovo enclaves. One suggestion is for Serbia's public company EPS to pay for the Serbs' consumption by donating electricity to the province.
