The government adopted a National Security Strategy last night, with Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac anticipating flak from extreme elements of society. Sutanovac told a press conference that parliament would decide the fate of the document. Govt. adopts new security strategy He explained that he expected criticism from those who opposed NATO, as well as from those who backed Euro-Atlantic integration, adding that Serbian membership of NATO was now “an abstract matter because no-one’s invited us.“ The defense minister repeated that he endorsed quality cooperation between Serbia and NATO within the Partnership for Peace program, of which Serbia is a member, as well as at the administrative line in the Ground Safety Zone. He said that during the planning stages, the National Security Strategy had undergone a series of alterations due to the changing circumstances in the region, including Kosovo’s unilateral independence declaration. Sutanovac added that those who had criticized the delays in adopting the document were now saying that everything had been done in too much haste, and that nowhere else in the world did ministries draw up documents of that nature.
