Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic was in Algiers on Saturday where he met with his Algerian counterpart Mourad Medelci. There, Jeremic said after the meeting, Medelci assured him that his country has adopted "a firm stance to never recognize Kosovo". Algeria "strongly backs" Serbia over Kosovo "It is with great pleasure that I visited Algeria as the first Serbian foreign minister to do so, while the history of our relations is that of brotherly ties," he was quoted as saying. The two countries, the minister continued, have agreed to embark on even wider cooperation, including that related to economy, military and culture. "Soon, a high ranking Algerian delegation will visit Belgrade, and at that time we will sign everything we have agreed on now," Jeremic said. "Serbia is exceptionally grateful to Algeria for its firm support over Kosovo. It is with great pleasure that I can say that, on this issue, there will be no changes," he announced. Medelci also spoke after the meeting to confirm that his country is offering "strong support" to Serbia when it comes to Kosovo. Asked whether Algeria is under pressure from the great powers to change that position, he said that his country "makes its own decisions". "We are an independent country and we make our own decisions. Algeria is in contact with many states, but we make our decisions independently," said Medelci. Kosovo's Albanians unilaterally declared independence in February last year, a move that Belgrade rejects and considers illegal.
