Spanish contingent to leave KFOR

Spain will be withdrawing its contingent from KFOR by the summer, according to Spanish Defense Minister Carme Chacon. “It is time to come home, we are returning home, congratulations,” Chacon said while visiting the Spanish unit in Kosovo, according to Spanish media. Spanish contingent to leave KFOR She said that the “mission is finished” and added that the Spanish troops would be returning home by the summer, in phases. The Spanish KFOR contingent is made up of 632 soldiers, who are stationed in the western part of Kosovo and are under Italian command. Spain is one of five EU member-states that have not recognized Kosovo’s unilateral independence. The Spanish defense minister did not link the Spanish troops’ withdrawal with Madrid’s stance on Kosovo independence. According to the AFP news agency, Chacon made sure to not touch down in Pristina, thus avoiding contact with local government officials. She arrived by plane at the KFOR base in Djakovica, from where she traveled to the Spanish base in Istok. Great Britain also announced in early March that it would be scaling down its contingent in the province.
