By accepting decentralization of powers the Serbs would receive partial autonomy and a better standard of living, says EU Civilian Envoy to Kosovo Pieter Feith. After a meeting with the international decentralization group, Feith, U.S. Ambassador to Kosovo Tina Kaidanow, Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and ministers called on all communities to take part in decentralization, as this process, they said, would create equal opportunities for all in Kosovo. Feith: Decentralization is solution for Serbs On behalf of the International Civilian Office, which is charged with the decentralization of the local authorities, Feith said that Serb involvement was necessary as it would offer them many opportunities to improve their lives, Radio Free Europe reports. “Now is the time for the Kosovo Serbs to move forward. This process will offer them greater autonomy and better living conditions in Kosovo,“ said the EU envoy, adding that all communities would benefit from decentralization. “The goal is to form better administrations,“ he said. Thaci said that the province had the necessary financial foundations to implement the decentralization process in line with the Ahtisaari plan, but that it required the engagement of all communities, particularly the Serbs. “For implementation of this to be possible the involvement of the communities is needed, it’s important for their voice to be heard and for them to be a part of the implementation of decentralization,“ said the prime minister. “Kosovo is a multi-ethnic state, whose government is determined to help the communities,“ he added.
