MPs began debating amendments to the proposed law on international legal assistance in criminal cases. Parliament continues session During the morning debate on the National Education Council, opposition members of parliament pointed to the bad situation in the education system while those representing ethnic minorities complained that candidates did not include a member of the Council Of National Minorities. Opposition Serb Radical Party (SRS) MPs complained that the minister of education was not present at the debate and emphasized that the education system was in "very bad shape". Social Democratic Union MP from the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) ticket, Zarko Korac, pointed to the importance of the work the council is engaged in and emphasized that the parliament is duty-bound at least once a year to complete a report on work, opinions and standing in education and the pedagogical development of primary and middle school education. He criticized the fact that Serbia does not have a strategy to develop national education. Balint Pastor, head of the ethic minorities parliamentary group, complained that the ethnic minority councils were not able to propose their candidate for the National Education Council. He said that this shortcoming could be overcome if parliament supported Edita Sos, who was proposed by the Medical School Society of Serbia, as she was a member of the National Council of the Hungarian Ethnic Minority in charge of education, and well acquainted with the problem of education in minority languages. “Participation in that body is essential as the National Education Council has important powers and plans the strategy for Serbian education,” said Pastor.
