The Humanitarian Law Center (FHP) has brought criminal charges against the 37th Special Police Units (PJP) for war crimes allegedly committed in Kosovo. The FHP president, Natasa Kandic, told B92 yesterday that according to information and evidence at the Fund’s disposal, the police unit participated in a number of mass war crimes in Kosovo. Many of the crimes, ordered by the Yugoslav leadership and MUP elite, were independently conceived and planned by the highest ranking PJP officers. NGO brings charges against crack police unit The unit has in the meantime been disbanded. The Belgrade District Court’s War Crimes Trial Chamber is already trying Radoslav Mitrovic, commander of the 37th PJP, for issuing orders to kill Albanian civilians in Suva Reka on March 26, 1999. The FHP claims that other senior officers and policemen, who committed dozens of murders and other serious war crimes during the war in Kosovo, have not only not been criminally prosecuted, but have continued to advance in the service. Some, for whom there is irrefutable evidence that they committed war crimes and even forced other policemen to commit murders and conceal all traces of their crimes, have become officials of the Independent Republic of Serbia Police Trade Union and other police unions throughout Serbia, claims a statement from the Humanitarian Law Center. The NGO also points to several events which “unambiguously show the responsibility” of officers and members of the 37th PJP. In submitting the charges, the FHP has met its legal obligation to expose those responsible for serious criminal acts who should otherwise be prosecuted by law, the statement continues. It also reminds state organs responsible for uncovering and criminally prosecuting perpetrators of war crimes that filing criminal charges is their basic legal responsibility and that they must “stop their practice of concealing evidence on war crimes in Kosovo, which blocks the establishment of the rule of law in Serbia.” Natasa Kandic (FoNet, archive)
