Call for Hague mandate extension

A European Parliament’s committee supported a draft resolution calling on the EU Council to discuss extending the mandate of the Hague Tribunal until 2012.

A European Parliament’s committee supported a draft resolution calling on the EU Council to discuss extending the mandate of the Hague Tribunal until 2012. The EP Foreign Policy Committee resolution also stated on Thursday that efforts will continue towards arresting the remaining two fugitives, Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic. Call for Hague mandate extension Parliamentary officials adopted the draft resolution presented by a Belgian MP and sent it to further discussion within the parliament and an eventual vote on the resolution, expected to take place on March 12. The draft calls for the council to “immediately debate whether the Tribunal’s mandate should be extended for another two years and whether that would be enough, taking into consideration that any kind of extension should be measures not only with time, but with results.” It also calls on the council to “continue is efforts in order to have countries increase their efforts in arresting the remaining two indictees and to crystallize with the United Nations a strategic which would avoid impunity.” The draft also demands that Mladic and Hadzic stand trial before the Hague Tribunal, "or in accordance will a special mechanism related to the Tribunal". The war crimes court in The Hague was set up by the United Nations Security Council.
