Jeremic gets “Best European” award Jeremic for his part reminded that 2008 was a tough year in which, "thankfully, there was no division made in Serbia between patriots and Europeans". “Now it is more than clear that you cannot be a patriot without believing with all of your hear in the European future of Serbia,” Jeremic said. He said that the government decided to make its European future a reality. “Perhaps in past years it was easier than it is for us to go on the European path and it was easier to fight to build a European future for a country, including ours. However, we are here and it is a hard challenge, in a difficult place and time, but I think that there is no more important goal at this moment on the horizon which the country should be looking at,” Jeremic said. “The full integration into the EU, puts Serbia shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the European people, and this remains the priority of the Serbian government,” he said. The award for economy – presented by Labor and Social Policies Minister Rasim Ljajic – was given to the President of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) President Milos Bugarin. Bugarin said that the task of the PKS is to introduce the Serbian industry to the advantages of entering the EU and the need to harmonize domestic laws with the EU regulations. He said that the Chamber is the Serbian government’s partner in the process of EU integration. The sports award was given to Jelena Jankovic, who was the top-ranking women’s tennis player in the world last year, while the Sovak ambassador to Belgrade, Igor Furdik, accepted the award given to a foreign citizen working the most to help Serbia it its EU ambition. Furdik said that Serbia is a priority for Slovakia’s foreign policy. “We are putting in efforts to help Serbia become an EU member as soon as possible, if it wants to,” he told the gathering. “We are waiting for you in the EU. We need you,” the ambassador said. The award for the project of the year was given to the Trustee for Information of Public Importance Rodoljub Sabic for his work in the institution he heads.
