Solana officially names envoy to Belgrade

EU Foreign and Security Policies Chief Javier Solana has named Peter Sorensen as his personal envoy to Belgrade. He will also be responsible for the ties between the EU mission in Kosovo, according to Brussels. Solana officially names envoy to Belgrade Solana’s cabinet stated that Sorensen will be coordinating the work of an office that will, along with political components, will also be working with EULEX in Kosovo. Sorensen will be keeping in contact with Serbian government officials, enabling cooperation and exchange of information on political events and advising Solana. He will also be working with the European Commission’s office in Belgrade, according to a statement issued on Tuesday. Solana's new envoy has been dealing with the region since 2000, when he became the advisor for the UN secretary-general’s Balkan special emissary. He was also the advisor of the UN secretary-general’s special representative in Kosovo from 2000 to 2002. Sorensen then also spent four years in Kosovo, from 2002-2006, with UNMIK as EU office chief. From 2006 he has worked as liaison officer with the EU Council in Belgrade.
