Defense ministers from NATO member-states have urged the Kosovo Serbs to enlist in the Kosovo Security Forces (KSF) in larger numbers. The call was made at an informal meeting in Krakow, where NATO ministers expressed satisfaction with KFOR and EULEX’s cooperation in Kosovo. “The allies are pleased with the way KFOR is carrying out its new assignments,” said NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer at a press conference in Krakow. According to the secretary general, defense ministers are pleased that the situation in Kosovo has remained peaceful despite the complex political environment. “The allies have expressed satisfaction with the manner of cooperation of various international actors on the ground, which, naturally, refers to the cooperation between KFOR and the EULEX mission,” said Scheffer. The Western Balkan region was also the topic of conversation in Krakow because of the meeting with Albanian and Croatian representatives, the countries from the region that have already received a NATO invitation. Scheffer said on Thursday evening that Macedonia had not, however, been mentioned. “NATO doesn’t know what a veto is, we operate by consensus, and unfortunately at the summit in Bucharest that consensus, as far as Macedonia is concerned, wasn’t reached,” he said, answering questions from Macedonian journalists. NATO hopes that the “name” dispute between Greece and Macedonia, which is the reason no consensus was reached on inviting the latter, will be resolved as soon as possible, and Scheffer promised that, in the meantime, NATO would maintain close cooperation with Skopje through the NATO Membership Action Plan. “NATO does not have, nor does it want to have a direct role in the name dispute,” warned the secretary general. NATO defense ministers dedicated most of the first day of the informal two-day summit to the key ISAF mission in Afghanistan, where, according to Scheffer, “NATO and the international community cannot afford the luxury of that mission becoming a fiasco.” Jaap de Hoop Scheffer (FoNet, archive)
