One of the creators of the draft Vojvodina Statute, Tamas Korhec, is skeptical regarding any kind of internationalization of that document. Commenting on a statement by Vojvodina Hungarian leader Istvan Pastor, who said that it was time to internationalize the issue of the Statute and Vojvodina itself, Korhec told B92 that the document’s provisions all stressed that Vojvodina was a part of Serbia. “No internationalization of Statute” He said that the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians had not yet outlined its position on the Statute, and that this was Pastor’s personal opinion, but that it could be the party’s stance too. Korhec said that he was skeptical of any internationalization of the Statute, not only because he thinks that the international factor could only bring more problems, but because the “international factor usually steps in and interferes in our problems if we show that we are weak and unable to resolve a certain issue.” He said that state governance, regionalization and decentralization did not figure in international relations, and that there could only be a question of international pressure if a country failed to respect its own Constitution. “If it continues like this, we will be in a situation where we have a state of complete anti-constitutionality, a crisis of the Constitution and the public legal system, because the Constitution foresaw that Vojvodina would have a statute under the new Constitution,” he said, adding that the current Vojvodina Statute was unconstitutional in at least 10 to 15 points. Korhec claimed that the draft Statute did not contain any elements of sovereignty, adding that the draft carried an accompanying law on the province’s jurisdiction, which would define its application more closely. He said that the law would be submitted to parliament once it was completed, adding that he expected the Statute and the accompanying law to be adopted by the end of February, or March at the latest.
