The Democratic Party (DS) members of the Electoral Commission (RIK) have resigned on Tuesday. This is according to party spokeswoman Jelena Trivan, who gave a statement to Tanjug news agency in Belgrade this evening. DS members resign as RIK scandal unfolds The ruling Democrats will now propose new RIK members from their ranks, who will in turn "with the majority they have, propose that the rules that allowed for such behavior be changed". It recently surfaced that the RIK members last year collected fees for their work per session, after calling up to six sessions a day. They ended up with paychecks that took a total of close to EUR 1mn from the state budget. "Our members of the RIK have in no way broken the law or procedure, it's that those procedures were adopted in the way in which they were adopted," said Trivan. "With the resignations we wished to express our dissent, not to prevent the RIK from existing, but to show that they are responsible for the events that took place during their mandate," she said of her fellow Democrats. One of the RIK members from the ranks of the DS was Justice Minister Snezana Malovic. Ten people were delegated to the RIK by the Democrats, including President of the Supreme Court of Serbia Sonja Brkic. The commission has 36 members and their deputies, who were paid a total of RSD 77.2mn, while 503 associates collected RSD 105.3mn. Some of them earned more than RSD 1mn – almost 30 times the average salary in Serbia. Parliament's Secretary Veljko Odalovic said that the DS members' resignations did not officially enter the parliamentary procedure this evening.
