An operation to arrest members of an organized group suspected of long-term abuse of position within the Serbian Army (VS) has finished. The organized crime group in question is accused of giving and accepting bribes, abuse of office and committing fraud when allocating housing to VS members, and paying out compensation for damages related to injuries in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and for social insurance rights, according to the Ministry of Defense website. The group’s activities have been under observation for several months, and Defense Minster Dragan Sutanovac has been in on the operation from the beginning, supporting activities into uncovering the criminal organization, reports Beta. In question is a well-organized criminal group, whose members include soldiers from the former Yugoslav Army, the Republic of Serb Krajina Army, and officials employed in administrative bodies responsible for veterans’ rights and the housing needs of military personnel. This is one in a series of operations by Serbian state organs targeting corruption and other serious forms of crime, said the Ministry of Defense on its official website. B92 has learned that seven of the criminal group’s 17 members were employed by the Ministry of Defense, while two were doctors in the Military Medical Academy. They are suspected of issuing fake medical documents on the basis of which flats were allocated, and pensions and compensations for injuries were paid out, reports Beta.
