The reaction to the Serbian Orthodox Church's (SPC) letter regarding the draft Vojvodina Statute “harked back to days of old,” says Metropolitan Amfilohije. He said that the “perception that the Church is an institution outside life and outside the destiny of people and nations, and the accusations that the Church is interfering in politics, are from communist times.” Reaction to SPC letter “throwback from communist era” He added that the “Church has never forsaken the fundamental issues of the people and state, not wanting to assume the role of a politician, but caring for what is the destiny of the people and nation.” Amfilohije said that the Church was “concerned” by the draft Statute, because the document “endangers the very existence of the people and state, as it is.” He said that among the negative reactions to the Church’s initial letter, the most prominent had come from League of Vojvodina Social Democrats leader Nenad Canak, stating that he was “a man who is constantly slinging mud at the Church and people of the church, and he has turned that into his trade,” adding that “some others, according to the same principles left over from the last system, would like to strip the Church of its fundamental rights and always attack it.” Amfilohije said that no such strong reactions were ever in evidence when members of other religious communities made similar statements.
