MP Balint Pastor, of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, said that it is obvious that someone is trying to stall the adoption of the Vojvodina statute. “The Vojvodina assembly passed the draft statute with a huge majority on October 14, 2008. I do not understand how it is possible for some parties to change their minds in a couple of months on such an important issue,” Pastor told Beta news agency on Tuesday. "Someone slowing down Vojvodina statute" He said that along with the statute, laws for Vojvodina’s authority have to be passed, the so-called Two Laws Omnibus. This official added that that some 95 percent of that law’s text has been harmonized. Pastor stated that if the political will exists within the ruling coalition, this law could pass through the government and be in parliament by the end of the month along with the statute. “It is clear that the adoption of the statute is the first step towards the decentralization of Serbia, without which Serbia has no business in the EU. All of this is tied together. The Democratic Party has the greatest responsibility because it is the pillar of the coalition both on the state and provincial level,” Pastor said. He said that it is clear that the Democrats (DS) have "several wings" and that that the Belgrade faction of the party thinks that it would lose votes south of the Sava and Danube rivers if it adopts the statute "too fast". “I do not think that this is good, because a confirmation of the Vojvodina statute is not only in the interest of the province, but all of Serbia,” Pastor said, adding that the DS promised the people a European future. He said that this is why it would be good for Vojvodina and its residents to receive their new statute, "as promised by President Boris Tadic, by the end of the week".
