"Super Serbs" Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic on Monday battled through baking heat at the Australian Open, local media are reporting. The Sydney Morning Herald says that Jankovic complained of burning feet and soothed them in ice during breaks as the temperature soared to 50 Celsius on court. Jankovic beat Austrian Yvonne Meusburger in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. "Serbs sweep" as Aussie Open kicks off Ivanovic, the French Open champion and Australian Open finalist last year, also won 2-0, beating German Julia Goerges 7-5, 6-3. Defending champion Novak Djokovic played against Italian Andrea Stoppini to end the match in three sets, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5. Serbia's top three tennis stars were joined in later in the day by two more of their compatriots: Viktor Troicki beat Spain's Alberto Martin 3-1 (6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4), while Janko Tipsarevic emerged victorious from his clash with another Spaniard, Oscar Hernandez. Defending champion Novak Đoković played against Italian Andrea Stoppini to end the match in three sets, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.

Serbia's top three tennis stars were joined in later in the day by two more of their compatriots: Viktor Troicki beat Spain's Alberto Martin 3-1 (6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4), while Janko Tipsarević emerged victorious from his clash with another Spaniard, Oscar Hernandez.

Tipsarević won in five sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
