Justice Ministry Secretary of State Slobodan Homen says a law on forfeiture of assets is the most important one aimed at fighting organized crime. Homen pointed out that two main sources of illegally acquired property are corruption and drug smuggling. Crime does not pay, says official "This law will take effect on March 1, and it clearly demonstrates that crime does not pay. Its essence is that anyone who commits a crime must prove how they acquired their property," he told B92. Homen pointed out that it was often the case so far that a convicted criminal went to prison, keeping the money, capital, and anything else acquired illegall. The law will be applied on future perpetrators of criminal acts, as well as on all those currently on trial, for whom no legally valid verdict has been passed yet, he clarified. The law will also be valid with verdicts passed one year prior to the adoption of this legislation, Homen said. "With regard to members of organized crime in Serbia, this law will cover more than 90 percent of all the biggest and most difficult cases," he said.
